Recommended .308
Anyone have any experience with .308 battle rifles. Suggestions are welcomed. Doing some research for a future buy. Parameters are:
Reliability Availability of parts Availability of ammo Durability Accuracy No specific order |
Re: Recommended .308
Depends on what you want.
Semi or bolt action number one. In the semi world. The FAL is an excellent battle rifle, it's like the AK of the .308 world. I'm building a AR-10 so give me about 3 weeks and I'll let you know. If it's bold action Remmington 700 police I'm sure you'll get more people chiming in... |

Always will go with a semi in a fire fight or battle. So I guess the parameter is semi, unless you have one helluva argument for a bolt action |

FAL - the right arm of the free world- used by over 90 NATO countries (last century) but stay away from CIA butchered guns.
Cheap mags & parts and build-it yourself kits abound. HK91 & clones have fluted chamber which leaves marks in the brass which IMO weakens it for reloading. Also its hard to fiel strip a roller bolt system without special tools (spring compressor). |

Not a gun expert.
I recently picked up a bull barrel DPMS LR-308 and a HK91 clone. I just finished pimping out the LR-308 with scope, panther grip, beefy bipod and adjustable target stock, haven't even sighted it in yet. It was NRA (rifle illustrated magazine?) rifle of the year in 2005 is says in the DPMS catalog. It's pretty heavy now which is OK as I am setting it up as a medium range target rifle. They sell replacement parts kits. Lots of ammo available at about 50 cents a round for surplus. I read a review that said it was very accurate, certainly more than the human component in this specific equation. I've taken apart the HK91 for cleaning, was easy. I looked through the Takedown Guide from Radocy and it doesn't say anything about a spring compressor. It does say "Do Not disassemble the recoil spring from its guide." If cybergold knows exactly where the compressor would be used I can look specifically at that section. I played with an original German scope on it, didn't seem terribly accurate, I bought it for short range firepower though. It had a collapseable (sp?) stock on it at the time which didn't help. Now it has a standard stock with an aftermarket buffer pad. I think there is a different configuration of the weapon for sniping. |
Re: Recommended .308
There was a huge post on this do a search in fire arms.
If you are looking for a nice distance rifle I would go with Steyr SSG 04 if you have the cash. I like the Steyr Elite better, but there are pretty much none to be had in the US. |

Consider getting a "harmless looking" semi-automatic sporting rifle like the Browning BAR. The political environment into which we are heading would give you an advantage. Does anyone know of after-market high-capacity magazines for the BAR?

I think these Saigas look relatively "benign" and mine will outshoot my old BAR. U.S. versions don't have the flashhider. |
Re: Recommended .308
HK G3 (aka HK91)
M1A FAL AR10 In that order. Just ask the Rhodesian forces which rifles would run no matter how dirty it got... G3. Nothing wrong with the FAL, great rifle, but from ergonomics to real world proven results the G3 has the edge IMO. I've got 2 friends who were both there. One native born and one merc'ed. Both preferred the G3. I place the M1A just above the FAL simply because of the superb accuracy. Reliability is about the same. AR10 comes in last because of reliability issues, I don't care how reliable your AR10 is on the clean gun range, any questions, ask the dozens of people who've brought theirs to courses by groups like Suarez Intl or people who've been in the classes and seen all the issues. |
